Etel Adnan (b. Beirut, Lebanon, 1925) is the author of more than a dozen books, including Sitt Marie-Rose (winner of the France-Pays Arabes award), The Arab Apocalypse, In the Heart of the Heart of Another Country, and Sea and Fog (winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Poetry and the California Book Award for Poetry). A retrospective collection of her writings, To look at the sea is to become what one is: An Etel Adnan Reader, was published by Nightboat Books in 2014, the same year that she was awarded one of France’s highest cultural honors: l’Ordre de Chevalier des Arts et Lettres. Her visual work has been exhibited widely, including at Callicoon Fine Arts (NYC), dOCUMENTA (13), the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin), Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (Doha), The New Museum (NYC), Sfeir-Semler Gallery (Beirut), Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts (San Francisco), and the 2014 Whitney Biennial.
