               The Cake Part video project

Stacy originally wrote The Cake Part in 1994. Last year she set up an online book launch for its publication. Stacy asked a large varied group of people to videotape themselves reading from the excerpts she sent them. Stacy described The Cake Part as "... a many-genred thing I called "fake essays"...constellated around Marie Antoinette...the book is about revolutions and some of their propaganda and ridiculousness..."

I sent some drawings of imaginary machinery and asked if I could make an animation. In return she sent The Discourse on the Guillotine, Stacy's satiric and darkly humorous view of the mechanization of capital punishment and the pseudo-science that followed in it's wake. The text reflects her deeply compassionate nature and her horror at the lust for blood still so prevalent today. I wanted my animation to capture both the horror and Stacy's wonderful sense of humor. I was deeply touched that the excerpt included a tragic ending. Though written years ago the farewell ending sadly foreshadows Stacy's own farewell.

The Discourse on the Guillotine is here.
