2. My first book, Eating in the Underworld, is a series of poems told through the narrative arc of the myth of Persephone. The poems are about being the daughter of a powerful mother, falling in love, being pulled into darkness, craving power. They are also about the death of my best friend’s boyfriend who died, in bed with her, when they were both 19 and at the University of Wisconsin. Almost no one knows this specific personal allusion because I speak “through” (Persephone) and autobiography is subsumed or strained through or refracted.
