Notes on Glamour and the Work of John Wieners (An Open Letter)

Glamour is a matter of placing too much faith in a stranger’s work, always in need of hitting the heights. You can bring that by showing up? Plain as day, like it or not. “Past the social” is the absolutely appropriate phrase to press upon where we end up, approximating light (dimly or well remembered lights) with the rhythm of words whose content seems constantly seamlessly uncovered by the poet. So much is taken in with only slivers pushing back through. When we travel that is part of the relief we speak of (should the trip go well) upon our return. Where we wake the light is different and then of course just behaves as it likes (as WHO likes?). It is invigorating. I tend to remember the way light would hang or draw back rather than stops along any itinerary. It is the one thing I want to make matter from. I want light bronzed. Glamour is part of setting that trap, a lantern in the bell tower I have always kept burning.
