Ten Easy Pieces: A Poetics of Inquiry

1. Aristotle’s Rhetoric usually appears with his Poetics. They amplify similar themes. Here’s what I make of this pairing: Language is not the primary stuff of poetry. A range of symbolic possibilities exists. Poetry is an art of performance, and as such it can show us things that we had not considered. It can press our capacities, drawing us forward into otherwise undisclosed realizations and actions.
