5. Williams also said, “Poetry is a field of action.” This notion of a situated discourse, one that influences a range of possibilities beyond the self-referential concerns of the art form, appeals to my sense of being in the world. One thing I’ve never liked about Jean-Luc Goddard is his love of movies. Cinema as cinema finally becomes obnoxious. By contrast, Terrence Malick’s films can careen off the cliff with his ambition, but he produces magnificent statements that are amplified in my imagination. And so he accompanies me for a long while, and challenges me to measure the world anew. Maya Deren or Nathaniel Dorsky likewise bring their technologies to the very surface of observable things, and they discover what had been hidden. The same can be said of Williams, Olson, Creeley. It’s useless to perfect a style; it’s everything to influence the conditions of art and the world. The self-contained enclosures become game-like, but the movement that leads to performances challenges me in various contexts, producing new knowledge, associations, actions, and energy.
